Our therapists specialize in adolescent development and use approaches that meet teens where they are — not watered-down adult therapy.
We work with parents and guardians to support the family system while maintaining your teen's trust and therapeutic confidentiality.
Teens connect from their own space via secure video — removing transportation barriers and the stigma of being seen at a therapist's office.
Colorado's adolescents are struggling at alarming rates. The Healthy Kids Colorado Survey has consistently shown that more than one in three Colorado high school students report persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, and the state has one of the highest youth suicide rates in the nation. These are not abstract statistics — they represent real teenagers in communities from Pueblo to Steamboat Springs.
Today's Colorado teens face a unique convergence of pressures: academic competition, social media comparison, climate anxiety fueled by visible wildfire and drought impacts, economic stress in their families, and the lingering effects of pandemic-era isolation during critical developmental years. Many teens are carrying heavy emotional loads without adequate tools or support.
Rocky Mountain Thrive provides specialized online therapy for teenagers ages 13 to 17 across all of Colorado. Our therapists are trained in adolescent development and use approaches designed specifically for the teen brain — not generic adult therapy adapted for younger clients.
Adolescence is inherently turbulent, which can make it difficult to distinguish between normal developmental changes and signs of a mental health concern. However, certain patterns warrant professional attention: persistent withdrawal from friends and family, dramatic changes in sleep or appetite, declining grades in a previously engaged student, loss of interest in activities they once loved, expressions of hopelessness or worthlessness, increased irritability or anger that seems disproportionate, and any mention of self-harm or suicidal thoughts.
Teens often communicate distress behaviorally rather than verbally. A teen who is acting out, spending excessive time in their room, or suddenly changing friend groups may be struggling emotionally but lack the language or willingness to articulate it. Some teens mask their distress with high achievement, appearing "fine" while quietly suffering.
If you are unsure whether your teen's behavior warrants concern, it is always better to seek an assessment. Early intervention during adolescence can prevent issues from becoming entrenched patterns that follow your child into adulthood. Therapy gives teens tools they will use for the rest of their lives.
CBT for Adolescents: We use cognitive behavioral therapy adapted for the teen developmental stage, helping adolescents identify thought patterns, build distress tolerance, and develop healthier coping strategies.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Skills: DBT's focus on emotional regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, mindfulness, and distress tolerance is especially powerful for teens navigating intense emotions and social pressures.
Identity and Self-Concept Work: Adolescence is a period of identity formation. We create space for teens to explore who they are — including gender identity, values, and future goals — with curiosity and support.
Family Systems Integration: With parental consent and teen agreement, we incorporate family sessions as needed to improve communication, resolve conflicts, and strengthen the parent-teen relationship.
Online therapy is a natural fit for today's digital-native teens. Many adolescents feel more comfortable and open in video sessions than in unfamiliar office settings. Parents and guardians are kept informed within appropriate confidentiality boundaries. We accept Medicaid and most Colorado insurance plans.
